Serving Balsall Common
## Landscaping in Balsall Common, by a firm based minutes away
Balsall Common sits between Kenilworth and Solihull, about fifteen minutes from our yard, and it is one of the areas where we do our largest jobs. Plots here tend to be bigger than in the towns, which changes both the ambition and the engineering.

The village is mostly post-war and later: 1950s to 1980s detached and semi-detached houses on wide plots, plus more recent estate development around Meeting House Lane, Kenilworth Road and the station side of the village. Gardens are typically open, generous, and bounded by long fence lines. Frontages are wide enough for real driveways rather than a token parking space.

That produces bigger, more structured work: patios large enough to zone into dining and seating areas, block paved driveways with turning space, paths linking front to back, and fence runs measured in tens of metres rather than a couple of panels. Where a garden backs onto open land, boundary work also has to actually keep dogs in and wildlife out.

Ground here is heavy clay with plenty of gardens on former agricultural land. That means slow drainage, seasonal movement and, on newer plots, subsoil compacted flat by construction traffic. All three are solved the same way: dig properly, compact in layers, restrain the edges and design the falls before laying anything.

## What Balsall Common gardens usually need
Large patios are the most common request: often replacing an original small slab area with a terrace sized for a table of eight, sometimes split into two levels where the garden falls away, and linked by paths to a shed, garden room or the front of the house.

Block paved driveways are the other big one. Wide frontages here justify doing it properly: full excavation, restrained edges, drainage that keeps water on the property, and a layout that lets two or three cars park and turn without driving over the lawn.

Fencing is a volume job in the village, given how long the boundaries are and how exposed some are to wind off open land. Turfing and artificial grass both feature strongly, and jet washing is popular annually on large paved and driveway areas that pick up algae from surrounding greenery.

Local conditions
## Balsall Common problems we deal with
Clay on former farmland is the headline issue. It holds water at the surface, so lawns turn to standing puddles in winter and a patio without a designed fall will always find its low point. Larger paved areas make this worse simply because they shed more water; a big terrace needs a genuine drainage plan, not just a token slope.

Exposure is a real factor on the edges of the village. Boundaries facing open fields take the full weight of wind, which is why fences fail here in a specific way: posts snap or lever loose at ground level rather than panels simply rotting. Post specification, spacing and setting depth matter far more on an exposed line than on a sheltered one, and closeboard often outperforms lap panels in the wind.

New and newer estate gardens carry the standard compaction problem. Construction traffic leaves subsoil like a road base, then a thin layer of topsoil and turf goes on top. Grass roots cannot get through it, so the lawn thins within two seasons. Fixing it means breaking the ground up and regrading before any new turf is laid.

Scale itself is a challenge worth naming. Big gardens go wrong differently to small ones: a terrace sized by eye ends up too small for furniture, a driveway laid without a turning allowance means cars mount the lawn, and a long fence line set without a string line reads visibly crooked. Setting out carefully at the start is what prevents all three.

Balsall Common questions
## Straight answers for Balsall Common customers
Do you cover Balsall Common?Yes: Balsall Common, Balsall Street, Meeting House Lane and the surrounding CV7 lanes. We are fifteen minutes away in Kenilworth.

How quickly can you come and quote?Usually same or next day, and the written quote always follows within 48 hours. Quotes are free.

What does a large patio cost in Balsall Common?Bigger areas mean more excavation, more sub-base and more material, so size drives the price along with the ground and your choice of stone. Guy gives one fixed written price on around 95% of jobs.

Do you take on big projects, or only small jobs?Larger projects are some of our best work: full terraces, driveways and boundaries in one go, staged so the site stays usable.

Is urgent work possible? We are not a 24-hour call-out service, but a fence down after a storm can often be seen quickly. Call Guy and he will tell you honestly what he can do and when.

My lawn floods every winter: can it be fixed?Usually. On clay it is about regrading levels so water moves off, breaking up compaction beneath, and sometimes adding drainage. New turf alone will not solve it.

What fencing stands up to wind off the fields?Closeboard on properly set posts at the right centres, with concrete or timber gravel boards keeping timber off wet ground. It costs more than lap panels and lasts considerably longer in exposed positions.

Who buys the materials? You do, on Guy's advice. There is no mark-up added on your stone, blocks, timber or turf.

How do payments work on a larger job?Staged: one payment at the end of the first week and the balance on completion. Smaller jobs are simply paid on completion.

What if something needs attention later?Ring Guy and we will come back and put it right.
